
While we know a dog is in pain when we hear a loud yelp or that our cat hurts when we hear a distressed howl, more often than not the signs of pain in our pets is much more subtle. Animals typically don’t show pain to avoid harassment from other animals. Knowing the signs of pain in our pets can allow us to address their discomfort sooner rather than later, and prevent problems from worsening.
Signs your dog may be in pain or discomfort -
- Reluctance to eat
- Vocalizations - groaning, whining, growling
- Lowered energy levels, not wanting to do activities they typically love
- Sleeping more
- Not wanting to be petted
- Excessive licking/biting
- Irritability
- Posture changes - hunching the back, staying in downward dog
- Limping/mobility issues
- Shaking/trembling
- Panting
Signs you cat may be in pain -
- Frequent or ongoing meowing/howling
- Going to the bathroom outside the litterbox
- Not wanting to be petted or handled; or picked up
- Behavior changes, such as not wanting to spend time with the family or not jumping up to their favorite places
- Increased irritability
- Not grooming or overgrooming
- Low energy
- Tail flicking
